Claudia Sheinbaum is set to win a landslide victory

Exit polls clearly suggest Mexico will elect Claudia Sheinbaum as its next president.

At least five exit polls show Sheinbaum is on course for a landslide victory after Sunday’s election. Polling by Parametria forecasts she will win 56% of the vote, with her main rival, Xochitl Galvez, winning 30% of the vote.

With a total of 5% of the votes counted a few hours ago, Sheinbaum had 59% of the vote, against Galvez’s 29%.

Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, will continue the agenda of her political mentor, outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose policies have focused on improving the lot of Mexico’s poor.

Despite the optimism surrounding her election—international media have hailed her victory as a “major step for Mexico,” with its “macho culture” and Roman Catholicism, “which for years pushed more traditional values and roles for women”—Sheinbaum will have far from an easy ride as president.

The country faces economic problems, including a sizeable deficit and sluggish economic growth, and escalating violence.

Political violence marred the election, which was reckoned to be the country’s most violent. 38 candidates were murdered during the election, and at least two people were killed during polling on Sunday.

Over 185,000 people have been murdered since Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumed office in 2018. Many believe he has made the cartel problem significantly worse rather than better.

Relations with the US, especially with regard to migration and drug trafficking, will also loom large on Sheinbaum’s agenda as president. Donald Trump has already said he would impose 100% tariffs on Chinese cars made in Mexico and deploy special forces to fight the cartels.

As a climate scientist, Sheinbaum has also vowed to drive her country’s energy mix away from reliance on fossil fuels.
