No information released about suspect who damaged civilian and police vehicles and injured multiple people during pursuit lasting nearly two hours

More than a dozen vehicles were struck and multiple people injured by a suspect who stole a state-owned tow truck and took it on a rampage lasting nearly two hours in Maryland this week, authorities say.

The shocking incident unfolded just before 5 p.m. on Friday near College Park.

Maryland State Police officers were called to a hit-and-run crash involving four vehicles on Interstate 495.

The driver of a Ford Ranger involved in the wreck reportedly fled the scene and pulled into a Park and Ride lot, subsequently leaving the pavement and striking a guard rail.

A Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) worker arrived in a tow truck to check on the driver of the Ranger, however, the suspect jumped into the SHA truck and sped away.

“I just had a crash and I was out at the Park and Ride at 95. A guy just stole my truck from the Park and Ride,” the SHA employee reportedly said following the theft.

The stolen tow truck was located at around 5:50 p.m. in Calverton, according to Maryland State Police (MSP).

The ensuing pursuit, which lasted approximately 40 more minutes, was recorded by news choppers and witnesses.

“The SHA truck soon entered a parking lot off of Beltsville Road at Calverton Road, ran off the road and struck a pole attached to a powerline. The suspect then rammed a Maryland State Police vehicle and several civilian vehicles before entering onto Priscilla Road in Montgomery County,” MSP explained in a press release.

“According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect is alleged to have struck 13 vehicles, which led to a civilian and two law enforcement members, a Maryland state trooper and a Montgomery County Police officer, being transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.”

The suspect was finally captured at around 6:30 p.m. after crashing the disabled tow truck.

No information has been released about the suspect other than the fact that it is a male who was taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
