Mother found unresponsive teen at their home after apparent attack
A male illegal alien has been arrested for the murder of a high school student in Texas last week, authorities say.
The horrifying incident unfolded on Tuesday in Edna, a city in Jackson County approximately 100 miles southwest of Houston.
Shortly before 7 p.m., Edna Police Department (EPD) officers were dispatched to the home of 16-year-old Lizabeth Medina.
Medina’s mother Jacquline had reportedly become concerned after the teen didn’t turn up at the Edna Lighted Christmas Parade where her cheerleading squad was performing.
Jacquline told local media she rushed home and found Lizbeth unresponsive in the bathtub and showing signs she had been attacked.
Lizabeth was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities launched an investigation into Capital Murder, EPD announced on Wednesday.
On Friday, EPD released surveillance photos and a description of a person and vehicle of interest.
On Sunday, EPD announced that a suspect had been arrested over the weekend in Schulenburg, some 60 miles from Edna.
“On Saturday, December 9th, 2023, with the help of the community, friends, and family, Edna Police Department, in conjunction with the Texas rangers, were able to apprehend the person responsible for the death of Lizabeth Medina,” EPD explained in a press release.
“With countless hours put into this investigation, we were able to locate an undocumented male subject, identified as RAFAEL GOVEA ROMERO in the city of Schulenburg. Edna Police Department and Texas Rangers immediately traveled to Schulenburg where Romero was placed under arrest for Capital Murder and transported to the Jackson County Jail.”
It is currently unclear where Romero is from or how long he has been in the United States.
An investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
